Tape, video stills on paper

Collaboration with Toby Upson

Assisting and attending the Youth Collective programme at Camden Art Centre, I created new work collaborating with Toby Upson. Exposing the distinct internal constructs of the gallery space, we devised a performance piece tracking the floor designs within the building. We attached our iPhone's to twigs found in the centers garden and followed the lines around the central upstairs corridor, filming the patterns and lines quickly captured by our phone cameras. The yellow, black and white tiles behave like a drawn line, with the grey granite floor cutting across as plains of block colour and texture.  Appearing and fade across below and around the camera lens, the windows, feet and lights occupying the different heights of the room and intersect the video footage. We exhibited stills from the video footage in the room next door to the floor within the video, as if they were trying to get back to the space that they came from. Like a swarm of bees or electrical static, the paper pieces would loiter at the door frame, spreading across most of the gallery floor. We used two separate tapes, yellow and pink, to signify a new path or set of marks made from the space outside. The two tapes also register the presence of two people or two pairs of hands, combining and coming apart, similarly to the choreography in the original performance.

The video work was shown in the Youth Collective Curates exhibition adjacent to the related floor-based work ‘Pink / Yellow line’. Shown in a triptych format, two individual iPhone videos track the separate perspectives of the two performers in the central video, tying together the overall performance and two separate but paralleling routes through the corridor space outside the exhibition gallery.
